My Thoughts on Max Weber and Bureaucracy

Max Weber's bureaucratic model endorsed the following:

Fixed division of labor- It is very important to have a division of labor.  People when set into multitasking environments commit higher percentage of error and much less when there is a division of labor.  It's important to know which department is in charge with which and the leader doesn't easily alter this since it's fixed.  Having a fixed task like technical is technical and financial and financial makes things easier.

Hierarchy of offices- Every lower office must have a higher office to watch over it like the employee is watched over by the supervisor, the supervisor is watched over by the manager and the manager is watched over by the vice president.  The president of an organization is just one person and it is very important to delegate authority and tasks to make sure rules are being followed, at the same time higher authorities and lower authorities should listen and discern each other's advice.

Rational legal authority- Authority is given to people according to the qualifications of the rules.  This is to ensure that people get competent not incompetent authorities.  Like for example, you appoint a manager/manageress who easily gets mad and is very arrogant, it would definitely kill the supervisor and lower employees' morals compared to one who is patient and humble.

Creation of rules to govern performance- Rules are always needed to govern performance as to set boundaries on who to appoint, who not to appoint, who to train, who to follow up, who to hire and who to fire.  With a set number of rules to set, those who are appointed as authorities will have much less room to abuse their given authority by the firm because they fear the rules and follow them.  Without these, abuse of authority and freedom does take place creating chaos and appointment of job positions will be very awkward like asking your accountant to fix machinery and vice-versa.

Separation of personal from official property and rights- There is obviously no room in this model for cheapskate bosses who let their employees bring their stuff to work. For example, you must provide your staff with properly working equipment and a decent environment.  If they are required to bring their stuff and so on, it's really a clear violation of proper labor laws and unions.

Selection based on qualifications- It's obvious that the under-qualified should not be accepted because they are a hindrance to work.  It's not discrimination or anything.  People need to be given tasks according to what they can do.  Nobody should put a bad writer in the publications department nor an accountant to do the work of an engineer.

Clear career paths- The organization if it does not make its career paths clear, is most likely going to fall down.  Unless people are given clear career paths, they tend to remain stagnant and later abuse their seniority as well.
